Esports in Colleges: How Universities Are Building the Future of Competitive Gaming

eSports Medals

Collegiate esports has gone from a niche extracurricular activity to a full-blown academic and athletic institution — and the numbers back it up. What started with a handful of programs less than a decade ago has exploded into one of the fastest-growing segments of higher education.

The growth is impossible to ignore

Over 280 colleges and universities are now members of the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) heading into 2026 — a 60% increase from just 175 programs in 2022. Universities now support more than 15,000 student athletes with $46 million in annual scholarships, with projections climbing toward $50 million for the 2025-2026 academic year. IconEraIconEra

This is not a passing trend. Programs now span community colleges, regional universities, and major research institutions, creating competitive opportunities for students at every level.

Scholarships and career pathways

The average esports scholarship in the United States ranges from $1,000 to $6,000 per year, though some elite programs offer full-ride scholarships covering tuition, room, board, and gaming equipment. Institutions like Harrisburg University offer top recruits up to $19,000 per year. Player Counter

The career pipeline is also maturing. Graduate job placement rates for esports program graduates exceed 78%, with pathways including tournament operations, game development, content creation, broadcast production, and esports marketing — fields that are growing alongside the global industry itself. Dedicated degree programs

Esports is no longer just an after-school club. Dedicated degree programs in esports management now exist at institutions including Shenandoah University, Boise State University, Oklahoma State University, Full Sail University, and others. Universities are investing in state-of-the-art arenas and facilities to support their programs — Idaho State University broke ground on a new $520,000 esports arena in fall 2025.

For more on the academic side of competitive gaming, the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) is the primary governing body and publishes regular data on program growth, scholarships, and participation.

The hardware challenge in college esports facilities

Building a college esports program means more than recruiting talented players. It means designing and equipping facilities that can hold up to heavy daily use by hundreds of students — often in shared, public-facing spaces like student unions, recreation centers, and residence halls.

That creates a real challenge: how do you protect expensive gaming hardware — consoles, controllers, displays — in a space where anyone can walk in?

Theft and damage are serious concerns in shared gaming environments. Controllers go missing. Consoles get tampered with. Without proper security, a program can face significant replacement costs that strain already tight budgets.

This is where purpose-built security hardware becomes essential. At Secure Entertainment, we have been designing anti-theft security cases and controller tether systems for institutional gaming environments for over 15 years. Our products are covered under US Patent 11,103,796 and have been installed in colleges, universities, military installations, libraries, hospitals, and more.

Our solutions for college esports facilities include:

Every product is designed to let students game normally while giving facility managers the peace of mind that hardware is protected.

The popularity is impossible to overlook and as stated by James Lampkin product manager for ESL (Electronic Sports League)  “This stuff is expanding out of control”
